buying a rabbit soon…please help?
I’m getting a rabbit soon, and I have a few questions. If you could answer at least one, it’d be a great help!
~1or 2? Do they behave better in groups or a lone? (sharing the same cage)
~Do different breeds fight one another? Like…are there some breeds that are bad to mix with another breed?
~Any specific foods I should feed it? Do they need veggies like carrots and lettice, or just hay and the dry food from stores?
~What common breeds are good? Opinions appreciated =]
~Plastic toys – safe or need guidance when letting one play with it?
~Anything I should look for to help making a good choice?
~Good toys?
I already know the basics – like how to hold them properly cause they can hurt their back, teeth chewing, and such! ^_^
1. Rabbits love to have company, but it is really up to you. If you think you can spend a ton of time with your bunny, then maybe only get one. But if you will be spending chunks of time away, getting two would be the best option. Same gender fight a bit to show dominance, so I would suggest a boy and girl pairing. But make sure that BEFORE they are put together you have each fixed. You do NOT want 66778 bunnies in an hour. ![]()
2. No, this isn’t usually the case. Every rabbit though, will have little fights with their cage mates to display dominance. It is natural as with any animal sharing a home. ![]()
3. You should be feeding your new bunny Timothy hay as their main diet.. It is healthy for them and will not make them fat.
You can buy these in large quantities from pet stores.
You can also feed them pellets in small amounts.
As treats, they can eat carrots, pears, apples, banana, leafy greens (preferably dark ones like arugula and kale. These give your bunny calcium and vitamin D. Remember, absolutely NO lettuce. It contains lactucarium, which will give your bunny diarrhea that could be fatal to him.), and broccoli. Be srue you don’t make these treats a huge part of what he eats. You don’t want him to be a fat rolly polly, do you? ![]()
4. Dutch pet rabbits are most common. They are sweet. I love Beverens (though they can get pretty HUGE
) and Harlequins. They are sweeties.
5. I always give my bunnies baby toys, like the little plastic keys or plush toys. Bunnies love to nibble, burrow, and snuggle, so they love furry objects like blankets or stuffed toys.
You can find some really nice bunny toys here, though:

I get a ton of mine from there.
Mine especially love the Rollin hay thing (it sounds something like that; it’s basically a ball you put hay in they have fun trying to eat out of) and the little keyrings. They love to make noise and throw them around.
They also love the little hideaways you can purchase.
6. Always pick a bunny that seems calm and comfortable in your arms. You don’t want one who’s freaked out to be held or come into human contact, because this could present problems with you trying to get him close to you later. I always pick the cuddliest ones, because I love snuggling with my pets.
You’ll know who to pick, though. ![]()
Have a beautiful day, and congratulations on deciding to buy a furry friend! I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun with whoever you choose. ![]()
