4 year old not interested in children’s museum. Normal?
We recently took our 4 year old to the Navy Pier Childrens Museum. She was completely stoked about going and riding the train. About 10 minutes into the train ride she was bored (I love the train!) and then when we got there she saw the toy shop and that was it. She wanted nothing to do with anything other than going to get a toy or going home. We paid our admission to the museum and had to make her go through the exhibits. After a couple minutes at each one she would ask, can I get a toy now? Can we go home? She wouldn’t have anything to do with any of it. Us adults thought it was a pretty cool place! I understand how when a child gets something in their head its hard to turn them on to something else, but this was a little concerning. We had planned a wonderful day in Chicago and left feeling like the trip was a complete failure and, frankly, a big loss of money, since NP is not cheap. We are now concerned about bringing her back to the city for future trips.
Don’t lure her in by offering to buy things. The children’s museum at Navy Pier IS cool. Don’t tell her what you’re bringing her in for–just tell her it’s a surprise place and that you’re not going to buy things. Train rides are boring–stuff flies by so fast, there’s nothing really to see outside. I like the rocking motion, but kids hate it. Take her to other places in the city, not just the children’s museum, and don’t psych her up–get her psyched on the excitement of the unknown so she’s not disappointed when it doesn’t meet her expectations.
